So, you wanna do digital transformation

24-02-2020 \\ Agile

Good for you!

It will be hard and sometimes frustrating. But when you learn to enjoy the journey it will be great, and one of those things that changed your life. Not only from eight to five, twenty-four seven.

How will this new way of working change my life you ask?

Well, by organizing, prioritizing and balancing your work life, you will be able to deliver more doing your work day, so you will not have to think about work or answer emails at night and on the weekends.

This all sounds good, but where to start?
Just do it! This old Nike slogan really embodies the Agile mindset, and the mindset is key.

OK, I will setup an Agile project, get a budget from my management, and start the transformation. I will make a business case that shows this project will earn itself back in 2 years, and this is great.

  • We will start on this day and the project runes for 6 months
  • We will setup an Agile frame work using Scrum
  • We will create new Agile processes
    • Reporting
    • Demand
    • Development
    • Testing
    • Release
    • Operations
  • We will setup training
  • We will pick a pilot project to run in Agile
  • We will have Scrum masters
  • We will have Product owners
  • We will need to keep Service Architects and Business analysts, because…

STOP STOP STOP!

There is nothing wrong with having Service Architects and Business analysts, this is not why I am stopping you. I am stopping you because now your 6 months have gone.

Yes, it took forever to define our Agile framework, because the people we need are already allocated to other projects in my organization, and it became complicated fast, because everybody needs something different form the process. Yes, we all agree Agile and Scrum is great, but it really does not fit what we are doing today. And we will still need to work with other departments that are not Agile and send all the same reports to management that we are sending today. And when we want to go into production, our release manager needs a BRSD, HLD, LLD, rollback plan, installation guide and a Test report to go into production, and that’s two months of work right there. Scrum says 2 weeks sprints, where you release to production. This is not possible, maybe we are the company where Agile does not apply?

Back to Just do it!

You need help!

Ok Ok, I get it. We need to hire someone to create the frame work for us. Someone that have done this before. I will pick a big consulting firm and they will deliver a Playbook for us to follow, oh man this will be great. They have done this before. They will know what to do. I feel safe that this will suceed and if they fail, I can say I picked the best, so it is not my fault. And best of all we can keep working in waterfall until they are ready.

Stop again, think! Ask yourself: What do I want out of this?

There is nothing wrong with getting a consulting firm to come in and help you. And yes, they have done this before, have knowledge needed to help you and show you best practice. But how do you know if what they give you is what you need? How do you know it will work for you? And the biggest questions. How do you get there? And What do you do until then?

Ok, I will try and answer these questions and more, in this blog.

  • Where to Start?
  • How much Management support do I need?
  • What is my measure of success?
  • If I cannot run it like a waterfall project, how then do I get my Business case approved?
  • Where to ask for help?
  • What is my target and how do I get there?
  • This is hard, is it worth it?
